1. How have you been impacted by infertility?

I was impacted by infertility due to a breast cancer diagnosis at 29. I also found out I was BRCA positive (a genetic mutation that increases risk for breast and ovarian cancer). I had a surgery to help lessen my ovarian cancer risk (my fallopian tubes were removed) meaning that IVF would be my only option for carrying a child thereafter. Luckily my husband and I stored embryos before my chemo treatments and we had a successful transfer of a baby boy who was born October 2021!

2. What helped you cope with your infertility experience?

Having a good support system from my husband, family, and friends. Also, I found breast cancer and IVF Facebook groups whose members going through similar situations to be very helpful.

3. If you could give anyone who is experiencing infertility one piece of advice/encouragement what would it be?

Try not to compare yourself to others who may be able to conceive very easily or to those who have an easier journey. Focus on your own journey and try to remain positive that things will all work out.

4. How did you help those around you have a better understanding of what you were experiencing?

I have always been very open about my journey with cancer and IVF. It allows me to get my thoughts and feelings out which in turn helps those closest to me support me better through it all.

5. If someone knows someone who is experiencing infertility, what is the best way they could support them?

Be a listening ear and do not tell someone to “just adopt” or “find a surrogate”. Just support their journey!

6. What does a rainbow symbolize to you?

Hope :)
